Center for Nonprofit Resources to Venture Out on its Own

September 15, 1999, Dayton, OH The Center for Nonprofit Resources (CNR) received an endorsement from the United Way of the Greater Dayton Area Board of Directors today to pursue the process of becoming a freestanding organization. The CNR Board will seek status as an independent nonprofit Ohio corporation with tax exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

CNR has 50 years of service to the Miami Valley in its history, having begun as the Volunteer Service Bureau. That program merged with United Way in 1975 and became the Voluntary Action Center. The current name the Center for Nonprofit Resources was adopted in 1997 to describe more accurately the programs product line. Since 1996 CNR has been a semi-autonomous unit of the United Way, as a result of United Ways current strategic plan which recognized that the CNR had different needs than a functional department.

"The CNR has come full circle," said CNR Director Risa Grimes. "United Way has nurtured and strengthened the organization for 25 years. Now it is time to let it stand on its own."

The move toward independence is just one element of a new business plan developed by the CNR Board which is comprised of 11 community and business leaders. CNR plans to expand its program offerings and reach out to a broader segment of the growing nonprofit sector in the Miami Valley region.

"The United Way Board supports CNRs expanded vision," said Craig Chancellor, United Way President. "We will be working together to ensure a successful transition and are confident that the community will respond positively with additional resources and support."
