YWCA Clothesline Project

The YWCA sponsored the Clothesline Project at Sinclair Community College during the week of October 14th, the National Week Without Violence. The Clothesline Project is a visual display that bears witness to violence against women. The public display includes a clothesline hung with shirts, each designed by the survivor herself or someone who cares about her, to represent a particular women's experience.

Natasha Williams of Channel 7 hosted the opening ceremony and the Victory Over Violence Award was presented to Holly McCutcheon.

The project started with 31 shirts hung in Hyannis, Ma., in the fall of 1990. Since that time, projects have begun in communities across the U.S. and other countries. Today, more than 35,000 shirts currently hang on Clotheslines in this country.
